What is Deep TMS Therapy?
When prescription medications and psychotherapy alone aren’t offering the help you need, dTMS can help provide relief from depression symptoms.
This form of brain stimulation has proven to be an effective and non-invasive treatment. It’s a safe alternative to traditional first-line approaches. There are many treatments for depression, and they work in different ways. Our deep TMS therapy machines operate outside the body and affect activity in the central nervous system. Deep TMS works by applying non-invasive magnetic fields to areas of the brain that are involved in depression.
Overall, dTMS treatment is exceptionally well tolerated by patients. In comparison, there are potentially harsher side effects from some medications and/or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), that may affect how a patient feels about their treatment choices.
Achieve TMS East generates clinically meaningful responses to treatment for many of our patients. We are the largest and most experienced deep TMS therapy provider in New England. Contact us if you would like to learn if dTMS is a suitable therapy for you.
How Does Deep TMS Treatment Work?
Find Out If You Qualify for Treatment
Start your Deep TMS Treatment
Deep TMS Therapy (dTMS) is an innovative treatment that can offer lasting relief from depression symptoms. dTMS has been clinically proven to be an effective and non-invasive alternative for those who are not able to find relief from prescription medications alone.
Deep TMS therapy is a procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. This treatment uses a special coil, placed on the scalp, which delivers magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain. With deep TMS, the coils are capable of reaching about 4cm beneath the surface of the skull. This stimulation essentially activates the neural circuits in the targeted area, resulting in an improvement of your depression symptoms.
Deep TMS technology is similar to MRI (magnetic resonance imaging systems) technology. Developed in 2000 by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), Deep TMS therapy has been widely tested, and proven both effective and safe. This treatment has participated in over 60 clinical trials worldwide. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved dTMS for the treatment of both depression and OCD. FDA-approved depression and OCD treatments are administered by Certified Technicians.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
Deep TMS therapy treatments take place over six to nine weeks, with patients starting to notice improvement as early as the third week.
Patients suited for deep TMS can expect a round of treatment to occur in 30-minute sessions for five days a week for the first six weeks, then two days a week for three weeks. Unlike other treatments, dTMS therapy does not interfere with your daily routine. There is no anesthesia, and patients can drive home immediately following dTMS treatment and continue with their usual activities.
Is Deep TMS Treatment For Me?
Traditional therapies for depression may not suit everyone; we’re individuals, after all. When antidepressants and psychotherapy alone aren’t giving you the results you need, consider deep TMS therapy. It may be a vital piece that’s missing from your mix of treatment.

One would think that an illness that affects 17.3 million people and is closely correlated with suicidal ideation, drug use disorder, and drastic drops in productivity is taken very seriously. “Prior to starting TMS treatment, I cried a lot and worried constantly. I wasn’t coping very well with my depression at all. Once I started the deep TMS treatments, I noticed a huge difference in how I coped with things in my daily life. I am hopeful the coping skills I have found through this treatment will continue now that I have finished my treatments. My experience with Achieve TMS East has been amazing; everyone was very accommodating. My TMS technician was wonderful, friendly, and so helpful through the whole process. I would highly recommend TMS to other people.”
